Visiting the Anne Frank House when staying in Amsterdam Apartments

When choosing an Amsterdam apartment bear in mind that no trip to Amsterdam is complete unless you visit the Anne Frank House museum. The museum is dedicated to Anne Frank, her family and the other people who hid in the Secret Annexe at 265 Prinsengracht during the Nazi occupation of Holland in the Second World War.

Located in the Jordaan area of central Amsterdam our Amsterdam apartments are all within easy travelling distance of the Anne Frank House. We have a good selection of Amsterdam apartments actually within the Jordaan area. When browsing our Amsterdam apartment website you can choose to filter your selection by location. Select the Jordaan and you will find a list of our available Amsterdam apartments that are very close to the Anne Frank house.

Anne's diaries are now world famous and they tell of the trials and tribulations of daily life from a young girls' perspective. In total there were eight people living in hiding and life was extremely difficult. They were living here in the small rooms for two years and one month until someone anonymously betrayed them to the Nazis. They were then captured and sent to various concentration camps. Tragically Anne, her sister and her mother all died in the camps and only Otto Frank, the father survived.

Once released he returned to Amsterdam and was given her diaries and papers which he subsequently went on to have published. Eventually the house at 265 Prinsengracht was saved from demolition and became a museum in 1960.

Today it is a fascinating and sobering experience. The Museum opens daily and visitors walk up to the Secret Annex and through the cramped rooms. There are still many original papers and artefacts there despite much having been removed by the Dutch police after their capture. There is film archive and postcards and family photographs. The museum is open every day from 9am .

It is good to get there early as the queues do become very long. One of the benefits of staying in one of our Amsterdam apartments is that you are free to come and go as you please. No waiting for the breakfast restaurant to open. With an Amsterdam apartment you have greater flexibility than with a hotel.

The architecture of these old Amsterdam houses enabled the Frank family and friends to create the secret hiding place. Today many of our Amsterdam apartments are within similar historic buildings. You will find that the majority of our Amsterdam apartments in such buildings have very steep stairs, just as the stairs in the Anne Frank house were steep. Those who live in such Amsterdam apartments negotiate these stairs with no problem , but to non Amsterdammers they are a challenge. On our website for any of our Amsterdam apartments that do have such steep stairs we do highlight this. However unless you have small children or have a mobility problem. It is all part of the charm of our Amsterdam apartments. Thankfully our Amsterdam apartments offer more space than a hotel would do.

Choosing an Amsterdam Apartment when Visiting the Anne Frank House.

Amsterdam is a very popular destination year round. When choosing one of our Amsterdam apartments it is worth booking as far in advance as possible to ensure you get the widest choice of Amsterdam apartments. Spring is a particularly popular time, especially around Queens Day (April 30th). We would suggest you avoid booking an Amsterdam apartment for Queens Day unless you are going specifically for that event. Our Amsterdam apartments will sell out for that date early in the year. If you are going for a special event then contact us at the earliest possible accession so that we can recommend a great Amsterdam apartment that puts you in the right location.

So when planning your stay in an Amsterdam apartment, make time to visit the Anne Frank House museum. You will not be disappointed. And at the end of a busy dat sightseeing come back to your chosen Amsterdam apartment and relax, taking a moment to reflect on all you have seen.
