One of the most popular attractions sought by those booking Amsterdam apartments is the sophisticated Museum Quarter (Museumplein), which is home to the world famous Van Gogh Museum. It is convenient for all central Amsterdam apartments and easily reached from outer-city Amsterdam apartments by public transport.
Amsterdam's Museum Quarter was renovated in 1999, setting out green spaces, brickwork paths and pleasant seating areas in a long square which encompasses not only the four world class museums but an excellent selection of Amsterdam apartments. Many more Amsterdam apartments are situated in the surrounding streets and avenues close by.
For families staying in Amsterdam apartments, the Museumplein is traffic free and has areas for both skateboarding and boules as well as a children's wading pool which doubles as an ice rink in winter. It also hosts the annual Uitmarkt cultural festival each August.
The Van Gogh Museum, a 'must see' if you are staying in an Amsterdam apartment, contains the world's largest collection of the works of Vincent van Gogh. The collection tracks Van Gogh's career and also houses works by other artists from the same period.
The museum is divided between two structures: a main building by Rietveld opened in 1973, and an Exhibition Wing by Kurokawa opened in 1999. The museum's official entrance is on Paulus Potterstraat, within easy walking distance of a number of our Amsterdam apartments.
The other three museums on Museumplein are the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art and the Diamond Museum, all well worth a visit if you are staying in an Amsterdam apartment. The area has a good selection of stylish hotels and cafés making this district one of the most popular choices for culture-loving Amsterdam apartment renters.
Close by on Van Baarlestraat, and near to a number of our Amsterdam apartments, is the Concertgebouw, a concert hall world renowned for its acoustics as well as its stunning architecture. If you are staying in an Amsterdam apartment close to the concert hall, take a stroll past it in the evening, when it is lit up and looks magical.
Museumplein is situated just a short walk from the famous Leidseplein, with its excellent transport connections, funky shops and stylish restaurants. Many of our Amsterdam apartments are on, or just off the Leidseplein, and its tram connections mean it is easily reached from Amsterdam apartments in all other areas of the city.
If you are staying in an Amsterdam apartment close to the Museumplein but prefer shopping to culture, you will be spoilt for choice! If you are in an Amsterdam apartment close to the Museumplein you can do your museum shopping in a shop annexe run jointly by the Van Gough Museum and the Reijksmuseum in the centre of the square without entering either museum. For fashion fans, pick an Amsterdam apartment close to the exclusive shopping streets of Pieter Cornelisz or Van Baerlestraat (outside the Concertgebouw) or the 'PC Hooft' (the Pieter Cornelisz Hooftsraat) where you will find all the big name labels.
